123. Scripture quotations in this essay are taken from the New International Version (1984), unless otherwise specified. I would also like to acknowledge the clarity on this topic gained from a course taken with Dr. John Cooper some years ago, as well as from his remarkable book, Body, Soul, and Life Everlasting (2nd ed., 2000).

124. Heidelberg Catechism, Answer 1, Book of Praise, 517.

125. Confession of Faith, 147–48.

126. Bartus Telder’s monograph of 1960 argued that persons, body and soul, “sleep” in the intermediate state. See Telder, Sterven . . . en dan? He followed this with Telder, Sterven . . . waarom? in 1963. Telder emphasizes that the whole man is dust, the whole man dies, the soul is in the blood, etc., and thus de-emphasizes as much as possible any kind of dualistic nature of man. He regards the body-and-soul distinction to be tainted with Aristotelian and scholastic influences (see Sterven . . . en dan? 47, 105, 142). For a limited discussion in English, see Van Genderen and Velema, Concise Reformed Dogmatics, 828–29.
